Istanbul, 25 January 2010 - Green Party of Turkey released an open letter to the European green MP's and MEP's about the resistence of TEKEL workers in Ankara. Ahmet Atil Asici, international relations secretary, called all the greens to support the workers who have been trying to defend their rights in the cold Ankara streets for more than a month: "Dear friends, As you may heard, thousands of workers of TEKEL (privatised once-state-owned beverage and tobacco monopoly of Turkey) have been on strike to defend their rights with their families. It is now more than a month they are in Ankara demonstating for their voice to be heard by the government. Everyone else but AKP government does. Recently, the Finance Minister of Turkey, Mr. Simsek, announced that "there is nothing to talk about, and all their (government's) fault is to pity those workers". This is unacceptable. |

From TREEHUGGER by Jennifer Hattam, Istanbul, Turkey on 08.14.09 Above a drab Istanbul alleyway, a bright banner proclaims, "Turn your face to the sun!" over an image of a field of sunflowers -- the symbol of Turkey's young Green Party, or Yeşiller Partisi -- signaling the location of the local party headquarters. Though far from achieving the mainstream success their sister parties enjoy in France and Germany, for example, the country's Yeşiller, or Greens, are shaking things up with their anti-nuke advocacy, democracy promotion, and ambitious vision of a downsized Istanbul. |
