European Green Party (EGP) Update Flash, February 18 2011 - Last week MEPs on the Foreign Affairs Committee debated the 2010 progress report on the accession of Turkey. In its resolution, the committee attributed the stagnation to the ongoing deadlock with Cyprus, the lack of dialogue among Turkish political parties and the undermining of press freedom and other basic rights. The committee's resolution will be voted on in the plenary of the European Parliament on the 8th of March. There has also been a lack of progress in assuring the legal protection of religious minorities. In particular, the Turkish Green Party and Green MEPs have expressed concern about the Draft Anti-discrimintaion law, which is in the process of adoption in the Turkish parliament. Ahmet Atıl Aşıcı, international relations secretary of the Turkish Green Party warned that “multidimensional (religious, racial, sexist etc.) discrimination in Turkey is very deep and this law if enacted in this form is far from satisfactory and actually will serve to legitimise discrimination rather than solving the problem.” |

Hurriyet Daily News , 3 September 2010 - The Green Party has called for 2 million Istanbul residents to gather at the Bosphorus on Oct. 2 to protest the construction of a third bridge over the Istanbul strait, which will allegedly result in the cutting down of 2 million trees. Citing an official document, Green Party representative Ümit Şahin told a Thursday press conference in Istanbul that more than 2 million trees in the northern part of the city would be cut because of the third bridge. “We received a document prepared by Istanbul Regional Forestry Directorate to be submitted to the Environment and Forestry Ministry. It says that 1.6 million trees on the [proposed] route of third bridge are going to be cut down if the project is carried out,” he said. |

Hürriyet Daily News , August 12, 2010, Istanbul - The Green Party has jumped into the fray over the upcoming referendum, calling for a focus on protecting nature instead of the constitutional reforms, an idea it poses as a “fourth” way in the debate. Instead of saying “yes” or “no” to the referendum, or boycotting it altogether, as other opposition parties have suggested, the Greens say they have chosen to stay out of such political games altogether. How this differs in practice from a boycott was unclear.
“We call on all the [political] parties and the people who are polarized with the referendum debates: First stop the destruction of nature, for our future!” the Green Party said in an Aug. 4 statement on its official website, calling on Turkish people to prioritize the movement to protect the environment. |
